Patience is a Virtue (or Am I Getting Played?)

ByHouseplant Admin 08/10/2026

A couple months ago I did something really out of character and reached out to a former colleague of mine to see if there were any job opportunities at a place where I used to work. The chances seemed small, but the response I received back was positive and soon I found myself starting to hope that there might be a change in my circumstances improving for the better. In the time since not much has happened. I’ve heard through the grapevine that reception to the idea of hiring me back was positive, and as time has passed I’ve started to wonder about my hopefulness. I want to believe positive change is on the horizon, and I want to believe in what I’m hearing – that it’s just a matter of me being patient and remembering that things either move really quickly or really slowly. But on the flip side I catch myself wondering if I’m putting too much of myself into the Hope category and not enough in the Realistic Expectations category. Even if reception is positive and things sound like they could move forward, that’s not a guarantee that they will. I don’t like the idea of allowing myself to hope too much because the sting of feeling like a fool afterwards is too much to bear.

In any case, I think what the universe is telling me, if anything, is that I need to make  change with respect to my financial prospects. All signs are pointing to it being time to move on, and whether or not it’s with a past employer, it needs to happen for my own happiness/fulfillment/security. I’m being vague on purpose because, unfortunately, I have been in the position before where I shared something about my experience online and someone with bad intentions read it and used the information to try to get me in trouble.
